Ethiopian immigrant-visa issuance has resumed

The Department of State confirms that the January 2026 immigrant-visa issuance pause affecting Ethiopia and 74 other nationalities has not been in effect since August 21, 2026, following a federal court order. Applicants may continue with NVC processing and Embassy interviews, but every case remains subject to individual eligibility, financial-support and security review.

Addis Ababa immigrant-visa interviews continue with mandatory prescreening

Current Embassy instructions require immigrant-visa applicants to complete the medical exam and attend a separate case-prescreening appointment scheduled by the clinic before the visa interview. Missing prescreening can prevent the applicant from attending the scheduled interview and delay the case.

FMCSA enforcement begins today for 10 revoked electronic logging devices

Motor carriers using any of the 10 ELDs revoked by FMCSA must replace them with a device on the agency's registered list. Beginning September 8, drivers who continue using a revoked device may be cited for operating without an ELD and placed out of service. Carriers should check their device name and identifier against FMCSA's notice immediately.

IRS urges workers and employers to review withholding and payroll responsibilities

The IRS recommends that workers review federal income-tax withholding after major life or income changes and use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator when appropriate. Employers should verify payroll-tax deposits and reporting duties. The IRS also scheduled a September 8 payroll webinar covering employment-tax deposits, Trump Account employer contributions, 2026 Form W-2 reporting changes and payroll resources.

The IRS says taxpayers may use an IRS Online Account, the automated transcript line at 800-908-9946, or Form 4506-T to replace tax records. Bank statements, receipts, photographs, title or escrow records, contractor statements and vehicle purchase records may also help document losses for tax filings, federal assistance or insurance reimbursement.

USCIS announced that its new Addis Ababa field office will begin operations September 9, 2026. Staff will verify foreign documents, investigate suspected fraud and collect DNA to confirm claimed family relationships. Services will be available by appointment only; walk-ins will not be accepted. This USCIS office announcement does not itself change NVC or State Department visa-interview scheduling.

Federal court blocks new birthright-citizenship restrictions

The U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland granted a classwide preliminary injunction preventing federal agencies from enforcing the 2026 executive order against members of the certified class or interfering with their U.S. citizenship. The court did not enjoin the President and allowed the government to issue public implementation guidance. This is temporary relief while the case continues, not a final judgment.

Nevada Health Link and the Nevada Health Authority awarded $2 million to 16 community organizations across the state. Certified assisters will provide free in-person, phone and virtual help with Nevada Medicaid, Qualified Health Plans and Battle Born State Plans, including applications, documents, renewals and coverage transitions. Consumers can find local help through Nevada Health Link or call 1-800-547-2927.

Federal agencies launch new CDL training and testing enforcement initiative

FMCSA says it is immediately removing more than 110 Entry-Level Driver Training providers from the Training Provider Registry after linking them to drivers who failed English-language proficiency tests. More than 160 other providers received proposed-removal notices after separate compliance investigations. FMCSA also began a nationwide audit of third-party CDL skills testers, while DHS and DOJ announced related inspections and investigations. Carriers and applicants should verify a provider's current registry status before relying on its training.

New I-864 forms authorize USCIS to request sponsors’ consumer-report information

Beginning August 31, USCIS accepts only the 08/24/26 editions of Forms I-864, I-864A and I-864EZ, with no grace period for the prior editions. The revised forms include a privacy release allowing USCIS to request information from consumer-reporting agencies. USCIS has not announced a minimum credit score, and sponsors are not automatically required to purchase and submit a credit report. If a sponsor has a credit or security freeze, USCIS says the sponsor should respond promptly to any request to release it to avoid delays.

State Department pauses all Diversity Visa issuances under updated guidance

The State Department says Diversity Visa applicants may continue submitting applications, attending interviews, and receiving scheduled appointments, but no diversity visas will be issued while the new pause remains in effect. The guidance says there are no exceptions and that existing valid visas were not revoked by this action.

IRS reminds extension filers not to wait until October 15

Taxpayers who requested an extension generally have until October 15 to file their 2025 federal return, but the IRS recommends filing as soon as the return is complete. An extension to file does not extend the deadline to pay tax that was due, so unpaid balances may continue to accrue interest and penalties.

FMCSA completed small pre-tests of flexible sleeper-berth and split-duty-period options and is preparing larger pilots for 2027. The agency expects 512 drivers across both studies; interested drivers and motor carriers may request updates from FMCSA at pilots@dot.gov. Current HOS rules remain in effect outside authorized pilot participation.
